Types of Care Explained

It's important that you understand the type of care you need before you make the step of choosing a Carehome that is right for you. If at any stage you have questions about care and the options open to you, whether at Example Carehome or anywhere else, call us on Phone-Number, and our dedicated staff will be happy to help.

Residential Care

The term residential care refers to the delivery of personal care within a residential setting. It is for those who can no longer manage living on their own even with assistance from home care agencies or relatives. Residents can expect 24 hour assistance with washing & bathing; dressing, getting in and out of bed, eating meals, using the bathroom, taking medication, making drinks and snacks, and more.

Nursing Care

Nursing care is the same in its approach as residential care, with the additional benefit of round-the-clock assistance from a qualified nurse. Those who have spent long periods in hospital are usually assessed as needing nursing care. Each resident who requires our Nursing Care Service benefits from the same in-home facilities available to the Residential residents. The fees charged in nursing homes are usually higher than those in residential homes; however the NHS makes a nominal contribution towards these fees for the nursing aspect of the care provided.

Respite Care

Respite care is available for individuals who need short term care for between one to four weeks to enable a full time carer to have a rest or holiday, or in the event that the carer themselves becomes ill temporarily. Some Carehomes have rooms specifically reserved for respite care; other homes only offer this service if there is a vacant room available. Respite care can be provided as a one off stay or for more frequent stays.

Dementia Care

The term "dementia" is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. Symptoms include loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding and differ from person to person.

We support and encourage

At Example Carehome we treat people with dignity and respect. We ensure that people have as much control over their own lives as possible. Our work is shaped by the people we support, rather than the other way around. We support and encourage, but never impose. In particular, we work hard to safeguard people from abuse. We believe it's extremely important to promote independence and understand that all of our residents should be treated as individuals so each member has a plan of care designed around their requirements and preferences, granting them choice in aspects of their daily routine. We also welcome regular visits from family and friends.

What are the charges?

Whether your stay in a Carehome is temporary or permanent your local authority must carry out an assessment of your needs to establish that you require care in a Carehome before it can help you with the cost. Most people will be expected to pay at least something towards the cost of their accommodation and personal care in a Carehome from their income and capital. The amount that you will have to pay will be determined by a means test following the local authority's needs assessment.

The means test will look at what capital and income you have. Capital can be in a variety of forms including savings, investments and property (such as your own home). The capital value of your property will be based on its current market value less any outstanding mortgage or loans.

If you have more than £23,250 in capital you will generally be expected to pay the full fee, however if you are looking for temporary, or respite care then the value of your own home will not count towards this figure.

If you are looking to move into care permanently however then the value of your home will generally be taken into account as capital although there are certain exceptions to this for example such as if your home is occupied by your partner (husband, wife, or civil partner) or dependant children.

If your property is taken into account in the means test you may be able to enter into a "deferred payment agreement" under which the local authority will agree to provide funding as a loan to be repaid when the property is sold at a later date. This could allow you to move into Example Carehome and begin to receive the care that you need whilst you are waiting for your former home to be sold.

Do you discriminate?

We aim to offer equal and fair access to all eligible people, regardless of gender, family or financial circumstances, race, colour, religion, or sexual orientation. We aim to respond to individual need, whilst promoting diversity, respect and spiritual care.

Cooking is a real chore and I need a special diet. Can you help?

Food is always an area of interest to residents and their relatives. It should not be a concern to either. Example Carehome has a fully equipped kitchen and its fully trained and highly skilled cooks prepare fresh home cooked meals ensuring a balanced and varied diet. Residents who have additional dietary requirements such as diabetes or low sodium can have meals prepared to their requirements.

Is smoking allowed?

Example Carehome has a "No Smoking" policy for the comfort of residents. Smoking is only permitted outside or in designated areas.
